Leadership Skills Are Essential For Health Care Providers

Leadership is often defined as inspiring confidence and support towards individuals to achieve goals (DuBrin, 2015). Leadership skills are essential for health care providers. Some qualities I would like to gain from this course are confidence, trustworthiness, the ability to inspire motivation and having multiple decision-making processes/models to use. Having more effective leadership skills will assist me in my workplace. As a future health professional, having effective leadership skills is an important asset. Leadership is important in Recreational Therapy because certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialists, also known as CTRS, usually advocate for their patients. It is also important because CTRS’s typically work interprofessionally with other specialists. While working with multiple specialists, it is important to have a strong voice and to be able to defend your own plan of action for patients. An example of this is when I was volunteering with a CTRS and a doctor d id not agree that a patient should attend an art event. This event was part of her therapeutic program set by the patient and her CTRS but the doctor viewed this event as being a reward for her. The CTRS had to use many leadership skills to advocate for the plan of action and patient. To improve leadership skills, it is import to first identify traits, attributes and behaviours you already posses, and ones that need to be improved on based on your leadership goals through a leadership portfolio.
